August 2021 Community Letter

Dear Friends of Simple Charity,

It’s hard to believe that the summer has come and gone! Our team’s hearts are full as we reflect on all God did through our summer internship program. In this letter, I’ll share reflections as we are…

  • Looking back on our summer internship
  • Looking forward to the 2021-22 school year

To our Core Supporters, thank you so much for your continued generosity. Your gifts empower our ministry! To those who are not yet Core Supporters, learn more here.

Reflections on Summer Internship

We thank God for a transformational summer with eleven interns! This diverse group of students represented eight colleges and nine nationalities. Our summer was fruitful both in terms of the work accomplished for Simple Charity and the deep bonds of friendship that were formed. Every one of our interns is deeply missed already!

100% of interns who participated in the full program agreed that they grew spiritually, relationally and professionally. Additionally, 100% of our interns said that they would recommend the program to a friend. In terms of the work, here are some of their accomplishments this summer:

  • Interns raised $10,659 for Neverthirst to provide clean water around the world.
  • Interns compiled a 700-page anthology of Christian thought on solidarity with the poor from throughout church history.
  • Interns completed a playbook for how one college chapter can raise $50k to fight poverty.
  • Interns created designs for the following web pages: summer internship, charity evaluation philosophy, charity search, core supporters, homepage, about, individual charities, podcast, solidarity and college chapters.
  • Interns wrote a report estimating Simple Charity’s impact if we hit our 3-yr objectives.

A huge thank you to all who gave, hosted and served this summer to make this program possible!

“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to partner with God in the goodness he is pouring into our broken world.”

Hopes for a “Normal” Year

Last week, we had our first call of the semester with all of the chapter presidents, including chapter founders at Abilene Christian, Auburn, UF and UVA. The new founder at UNC was unable to make the call. As campuses go back at full capacity, we are hoping for a relatively normal school year of in-person Bible studies, fundraising events and chapter meetings!

We are sad to announce that we had to eliminate our Director of Students position due to budget constraints, so Amanda Sherman will be leaving Simple Charity and pursuing other opportunities. During our chapter presidents’ call, each of the students expressed their gratitude for Amanda’s service to them and to this organization. She is a hard-working and empathetic person and will be missed in Simple Charity. Amanda’s work allowed us to grow our network to over 20 campuses around the country, resulting in the five chapter start-ups that are launching this year and eleven student interns during the summer. We are so grateful for her labor!

Our student leaders were amazing in sending her off well and will continue to be amazing as they lead a movement of Christian students on their campuses who are fighting poverty in the name of Jesus. Please pray for our student leaders for wisdom and momentum, that students would join their chapters and be zealous for the mission. Pray that the Lord would use these students to create transformational communities of practice that live out the call of Jesus to love others as we love ourselves.

If you are not a Core Supporter (or if you don’t know what that means!) I would love to find 45 minutes to connect on the mission and vision of Simple Charity and share how you can support us. You can use this link to schedule a video call with me.

We believe that solidarity with the poor is global, essential and part of the abundant life. We believe that loving the poor is an essential component of being a disciple of Jesus. God has called us to bring the message and practice of solidarity with the poor to more and more Christians throughout this country. Thank you for being a part of our story!

With gratitude,
